Windows RT Jailbreak Achieved To Run Desktop Apps On Surface

Looking to jailbreak your Windows RT? Then, here’s a good news that its been jailbroken (hacked) to allow desktop apps to run on Microsoft’s Windows 8 ARM-based operating system. Means that along with the standard Windows RT apps, you’ll now be able to play , install & run Windows desktop applications on your Windows RT tablets.

According to The Verge, “using a method to exploit the setting in memory, the vulnerability could allow Windows RT to run ARM compiled desktop apps. The revelation is a jailbreak, but no x86 desktop apps will run as they need to be compiled to ARM to work on Windows RT – making this exploit rather limited right now. The trick will need to be executed each time the operating system is booted up and will persist until it’s reset.”

“MSFT’s artificial incompatibility does not work because Windows RT is not in any way reduced in functionality. It’s a clean port, and a good one. But deep in the kernel, in a hashed and signed data section protected by UEFI’s Secure Boot, lies a byte that represents the minimum signing level.

Now that the Windows RT is jailbroken by the guys over at On the Surface Security, and  not particularly useful right now, but expect to see third-party desktop apps from hackers and devs for Windows RT in the future. Could be a great idea to take this route: the app restriction was put in place by Microsoft to extend battery life in RT tablets. Without the restriction in place, expect to see a slump in how long your power lasts.
