How To Download & Install Android 4.1 Jelly Bean On Galaxy Nexus (GSM) [Tutorial]

We have no exact official and final release date of the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update. This is not an Official OTA released by Google Inc. and is a beta firmware which is released by Clock Work Mod sources. Means the preview build of Android 4.1 which is meant for developers who are attending Google I/O, and will only run on devices that Google handed over to them yesterday.

Thankful to XDA member named bigxie, for extracting and compiling an image of the Jelly Bean ROM which is flashable on existing GSM Galaxy Nexus devices via ClockWorkMod Recovery. Being its a beta and not a final build you have to keep in mind athat there are quirks and bugs around the corner to attack.

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean was the next big version announced at Google I/O and is due to be rolled out in July for Android device “Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S”. Well being an owner of HTC or Samsung must have to wait a while before the OTA update hits your device. Of cource here’s the reason why you must always have a Google-branded device!

Note: This firmware should be strictly applied on the devices which are unlocked devices and are the International version of GSM model bearing I9250 model number.

The steps to install the ROM right now are pretty simple, provided that you are rooted and have ClockworkMod Recovery installed on your device, you can now follow the step-by-step guide given below and you’ll then running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean on your Galaxy Nexus in no time after installation.

How To Install Android 4.1 Jelly Bean Update on GSM Galaxy Nexus

Step 1: Download and flash ClockworkMod Recovery by heading over to this link.

Step 2: Download Jelly Bean image, the root fix and radio from this thread over at XDA. Save all the downloaded files in the root directory of your Galaxy Nexus.

Step 3: Power Off your Nexus device and turn it back on while holding down the Volume Down and Power Buttons and you’ll now boot directly into ClockworkMod Recovery.

Step 4: Best to take a nandroid backup of your device right now.

Step 5: Heading to the main menu of CWM, wipe all the data, do a factory reset and wipe Dalvik cache.

Step 6: Now select install zip from sdcard > choose zip from sdcard > select the Jelly Bean zip you downloaded and placed in your sdcard in Step 2.

Step 7: Once again repeat Step 6, but this time flash the radio file.

Step 8: Now again, repeat Step 6, this time flash the root fix (Note: This step isn’t necessary if you are not looking forward to remain rooted after the update).

Step 9: After flashing done for all the three files, simply select reboot system now from CWM’s main screen and you’ll be booted right into Android 4.1 Jelly Bean on your Galaxy Nexus (GSM Version).

While the Google’s first tablet device ever made on the planet to ship with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean will be the Nexus 7 tablet, by ASUS, that was announced at I/O yesterday. Specially aimed to compete with Amazon Kindle Fire, but not the iPad, the Nexus 7 is a $199 tablet with a 7″ display, a quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor powered device to be landing soon.
